3 Tips to Living with Chronic Pain

  1. Be Educated: Make sure to educate yourself as much as you can on your condition. This does not necessarily mean google searching your diagnosis and reading every blog posted on the subject. This means speaking with your health care provider and asking questions. This means reading books and journal articles written by medical professionals on the topic. The more you know, the better advocate you can be for yourself.
  2. Be An Active Participant In Your Care: Just like other chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, there is no single “magic pill” to cure all. There are medications on the market to help manage your symptoms, but the rest is up to you. As with other health issues, it is important to drink plenty of water, get adequate rest, eat well, and exercise. The old saying is true: A body in motion stays in motion. A body at rest stays at rest.
  3. Live Your Life: It is important to not let a diagnosis define you as a person. You are not a diagnosis. You are a person living with a chronic condition. You can be in pain at home or when going to dinner with friends, going for a walk, or going to the mall. Enjoy your life. You only get one.
